Yann Herrera Fuchs

Region:
North America
Scholar Date:
2018

Thanks to the connections and fieldwork experience he made during his scholarship year, Yann is currently a PhD candidate at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania. He studies marine ecology of temperate and tropical reef ecosystems under the context of climate change.

Before commencing his PhD, Yann followed up with several of his scholarship contacts and worked in an array of transdisciplinary projects. He joined the Ocean Exploration Trust to map submerged and unexplored caves of the Channel Islands in California, helped collect sponge samples for the Chilean Antarctic Insitute in the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica, and worked alongside various small-scale fishing communities in Baja California in Mexico monitoring reef populations.

In his spare time, he joins Lindblad Expeditions as an Expedition Diver to document marine life and share on board with guests. This, too, thanks to the experiences he gained during his scholarship year.

Yann’s favourite dive is always the next one, but to pinpoint one he will never forget plunging into the kelp forests of Isla Benitos, with towering kelp canopies in ocean blue waters and a mesmerizing mix of tropical and temperate species.
