For more than 30 years, the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society (OWUSS) has run an internship program alongside its founding scholarship, extending the organization’s mission of developing future leaders in marine science and ocean conservation to a broader group of undergraduates through shorter, paid, experience-based placements. The scholarship itself dates to 1974, and internships were added to the Society’s offerings as the program grew internationally in the years following the 2001 Rolex partnership and 2007 Australasian expansion. Internships run one to three months, primarily in summer, and include a travel/room-and-board grant plus a living stipend. The program currently offers seven internships in North America: the AAUS Mitchell Scientific Diving Research Internship, the Dr. Lee H. Somers AAUS Scientific Diving Internship, the Dr. Glen H. Egstrom DAN Diver’s Health and Safety Research Internship, the DAN Diver’s Safety Internship, the National Park Service Research Internship, the Dr. Jamie L. King REEF Marine Conservation Internship, and the Paul L. Schutt Underwater Photography Internship. Across its history, OWUSS reports having supported 107 interns in North America and Europe (alongside 103 Rolex Scholars), building a combined legacy of over 200 scholars and interns who have gone on to careers in underwater science, research, and photography.
